Blog twelve: Importance of Hydration
The body is made up of 60-80% water, without water the body would not function properly. Water helps promote bodily function, keeping cells healthy and productive, joints lubricated, digestion working, which also aids in sleep quality and mood. A rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounce of water (i.e you weight 150 lbs, drink 75 oz water). With this being said, too much water can actually filter out your system, disposing of important cells and causing too much swelling in the cells (bad and dangerous!!). It’s important to utilize different drinks in your water consumption: tea, smoothies, coconut water, electrolytes, and other drinks. I like to use the brand LMNT for electrolytes. LMNT is a salt mix which helps balance cells function and production. Brands like nuun tablets and dripdrop are also good alternatives. Watch for added sugar and artificial sweeteners!
Hydration is more than just drinking water, it’s the quality of water you drink. Water systems/ tap water have been found to have metals, pesticides, nitrates, arsenic, and other pollutants in them. Different water filtration systems can filter out many of these additives found in water. These pollutants can build up in your body and cause symptoms like fatigue, headaches, acne, digestive issues, and nausea. These symptoms may not present themselves until YEARS later. Think of a penny jar, each time you add a penny to your penny jar, its barely noticeable, until years later, when it’s full. The penny jar is your body and each penny is each time you get exposed to the pollutants. EWG’s guide explains which water filter would be best for you depending on your location and goals (linked below). I use the EPIC water filtration system and I’ve seen a huge difference in my skin and mood.
